hyperspatial unboxing

hyperspatial unboxing is a series of large-scale dreamscapes painted on collapsed cardboard boxes. Collaged paintings of possible worlds populate the prismatic works, with memories and speculative manifestations nestled amidst lush botanical ecosystems. Paying homage to former trees, I attempt to metaphorically restore the habitats upon the warped cardboard surfaces. 

By repurposing the cardboard from product packaging, I redefine the corporate marketing concept of ‘unboxing.’ In response to collective cognitive dissonance surrounding spending habits and values, hyperspatial unboxing asks: What is the true cost of our hyper-consumerism?

Moreover, the series critiques the contemporary fine art market’s prioritization of work conducive to longevity and preservation. What good is preserving art when we fail to preserve our planet? How can we shift our values to align with planetary health conducive to the flourishing of human and beyond-human life?

This series extends my creative investigation into the ontology of consciousness through ecological and autobiographical lenses. As an autistic artist, my lived experience – including forced psychiatric hospitalizations of my youth – establishes the underlying foundations of this investigation. hyperspatial unboxing initially emerged out of my neurodivergent disdain for flat rectangular canvases and other widely unquestioned norms.
